Chasing Peak Colors in Lake Lure

The waterfall of fall colors flooding my social media feeds finally did me in—I had to plan another trip to the mountains. As we inched closer to our quick weekend family getaway, I started to get nervous. Peak colors were forecast for mid-to-late October, and our trip was in early November. Eek.

Turns out, I didn’t need to worry one bit. The leaves saved their most brilliant show just for us, and peak color ended up landing perfectly on our weekend. Talk about magical timing.

I’ve talked plenty about Lake Lure and Chimney Rock before, so I’ll keep this short and sweet. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves and simply say this: visit western North Carolina. They want to see you. They welcome you. And their small towns truly benefit from your business.

For our stay, we returned to our favorite cabin rental—Tranquility at the Lake—which never fails to live up to its name. We shared this trip with family and got them to fall in love with the cabin and the mountains as well.

What’s your favorite fall destination, and do you prefer to plan trips around peak leaf color—or let the season surprise you?

My dream fall trip: New England.
